John H. Carter

1921-2023

John H. Carter, 101, of Olive Hill, KY entered into rest Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at St. Claire Healthcare in Morehead, KY. He was born, a son to the late Gus and Lucy Carter on July 2, 1921, in Olive Hill, KY.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Thurma Barker Carter, whom he married in 1944; six sisters, Goldie Underwood, Nellie McGlone, Sabra Michalovich, Mabel McKinney, Faye Messer and infant sister, Oalie Carter; four brothers, Gussie Carter Jr., Pete Carter, Morgan Eugene Carter, and infant brother Estill Carter; one stepson, Melvin Hall; and one son-in-law, Benny Webb.

A lifelong resident of Olive Hill, KY, Mr. Carter worked 30 years for General Refractories in Olive Hill and was elected as President of the AFLCIO Union Local.

He repented and was Baptized in Jesus’ name in November 1964, He was a member of the Limestone Apostolic Church, serving as Sunday School superintendent, church bus driver, trustee board member, and also served through playing his guitar and singing. Later he also attended Clearfield Apostolic Church.

As an accomplished musician, John Carter, mastered playing his J-45 Gibson flat top guitar, and he played it extensively during his service with for Lord.  He was also skilled in playing the banjo, dobro, and harmonica, and also dabbled some with the mandolin. He taught Tom T. Hall his first chords on the guitar and played many years at Carter Caves with the Back Porch Pickers. Throughout the years he jammed with such bluegrass stars as Dr. Ralph Stanley, J.D. Crowe and Mr. Bill Monroe.

He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends and mowing grass, even breaking in a new riding mower in May of this year.

When ask what he attributed his longevity to he would say “Three things, soup beans, corn bread, and honoring my Father and Mother,” Ephesians 6:1-3

John is survived by his second wife, Anna Bernice Carter, whom he married in 2001. Three daughters, Diana (Mitchell) Butler of Columbus, Ohio, Johnnie Sue Webb, and Madonna (Jim) Short both of Olive Hill; four step-children, Gloria Hall, Joninice Ison, Patricia Kees, and Nellie Hall; seven grandchildren, Scott Butler, Cindy Leonard, John Butler, Dana Adams, Tina DeBord, Rachel Short-Davis, and Jessica Short-Long; as well as seven great-grandchildren. In addition to these he leaves behind a special nephew, Mike Barker; and close friend, Billy Dixon; as well as other family and friends that will cherish his memory.

Funeral Services will be conducted 2:00 PM, Sunday, July 2, 2023, at the Duvall & Moore Funeral Home in Olive Hill, KY with Jack Vernatter and Bro. Rick Crank officiating. Burial will follow in Watson Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Steve Davis, Damon Moberly, Dwayne Moberly, Roger Knipp, Billy Dixon, and Dave Leonard.

Honorary pallbearer will be David Lewis.

Friends may visit 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM Saturday, July 1, 2023, and 9:00 AM until the time of service at 2:00 PM Sunday, July 2, 2023, at the Duvall & Moore Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 149 Whitt Street, Olive Hill, KY 41164.
