Charles Thompson Obituary

 

Charles David Thompson, 81, of Olive Hill, KY, entered into rest, Sunday, September 22, 2019 at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, KY. He was born, December 7, 1937, a son, to the late Ben F. Thompson, Jr.  and Alma Henderson Thompson of Olive Hill, KY.

After graduating High School, Mr. Thompson attended Morehead State University for two years. He served 4 years and 9 months with the Army National Guard in Olive Hill, KY. He was drafted into the Army in December 1960, where he served 2 years in active duty. After basic training he was stationed at Fort Knox, KY with the highly secret U.S. Armor Board, testing tanks and weapons for the United States and its allies.  He received an honorable discharge from both in 1962. After his military service he attended Ashland Business College for two years, graduating with a business degree.  

Charles was a member of Operating Engineers Local 181 in Ashland, KY and United Mineworkers Union Local 621 in Pikeville, KY and was employed as a heavy equipment mechanic.

Charles was a child of God for 45 years, was of the Baptist faith, and attended Henderson Branch Church.  He enjoyed going to church, fishing, farming, and spending time with his family, and sitting on the back porch.  He was an animal lover and loved to sing in church with his wife, and whistle.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Courtney Brooke Porter and one sister; Joan Kay Brown.

Charles is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary Ruth Gilliam Thompson; three daughters, Kimberly Robin Thompson, Susan Thompson Pennington (Bryan) and Jackie Bauers (Joe); one sister, Linda Butler (Jimmy) of Columbus, OH; two brothers, Ben F. Thompson III (Mary Alice) and Terry Thompson (Kim), both of Olive Hill; five grandchildren, Amie Lynn Lowe, Ashley Vannatter (Tyler), Shasta Reynolds (A.J.), C.C. Porter, and Taylor Jones; a close niece and nephew, Jayla Barker and Billy Barker (McKayla); six great-grandchildren, Atiana Perez, Khloe Easter, Lexie Wages, Aubrey Johnson, Tylie Vannatter and Harper Reynolds; and one sister and brother-in-law, J.W. and Becky Barker.

Funeral services will be conducted 6:00 PM, Thursday, September 26, 2019 at the Duvall & Moore Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Olive Hill, KY with Bro. Jason Johnson & his brother-in-law,  J.W. Barker, officiating. A private burial will be conducted Friday, September 27, 2019 at the Kiser Cemetery with military honors.

Serving as Pallbearers will be: C.C. Porter, Darren Barker, J.W. Barker, Billy Barker, Todd Frazier and Terry Thompson.
